Eric Zilverberg gives Marten and Oopjen a new life
With his latest work, artist Eric Zilverberg draws inspiration from one of the most iconic paintings in art history: Marten and Oopjen by Rembrandt. In a contemporary and imaginative interpretation, he brings the famous couple into the present, without losing their historical character.
The recognizable figures of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, known for their stately posture, white collars, and dark clothing, find a new setting in Zilverberg’s work. Surrounded by colorful forms, flowers, and dreamlike images, a surprising encounter between past and present emerges.
Rembrandt's original diptych (1634) is unique. The two life-size portraits were jointly purchased by the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre in 2016 and have since been on display alternately in Amsterdam and Paris.
Where Rembrandt immortalized status, wealth, and individuality, Zilverberg explores the universal human need for connection, imagination, and beauty.
The result is a work that not only refers to the Golden Age but also engages in a contemporary dialogue with today's audience. History and fantasy come together in a colorful composition that invites the viewer to discover ever-new details.
Where Rembrandt captures status and individuality, Zilverberg explores the power of imagination and the timeless human need for connection. The result is a vibrant encounter between the seventeenth century and the present, in which history and fantasy meet.
“An artist never retires; you are an artist heart and soul, for your entire life.” - Eric Zilverberg
